Off-Season Tracker: Championships

JEROME Randle will return to Adelaide with a new piece of jewellery, after clinching the Lithuanian Championship alongside former 36er Brock Motum, with a 97-70 victory for BC Zalgiris. Randle scored the team-high 16 points and seven assists in the victory, after leading Zalgiris 4-1 in the Final Series over Neptunas and new Perth Wildcats signing Angus Brandt.
While Brandt was moved into the starting line-up for his side, and contributed six points and six boards in their last encounter, it wasn’t enough to defeat the reigning Champions. It is the sixth consecutive title for Zalgiris, who have won the cup 18 times since the establishment of the Lithuanian Basketball League in 1993.

Closer to home, the Wellington Saints have won the 2016 NZNBL Championship, as Torrey Craig, Tai Wesley, Shea Ili, Dion Prewster and Leon Henry faced the Super City Rangers, featuring Mika Vukona, Corey Webster and Reuben Te Rangi. The Saints were quick to put on the pressure in the Grand Final on Saturday night, restricting the Rangers to just one bucket in the first six minutes as they pulled out to an early 16-point lead. The Rangers managed to reduced their deficit to just three in the second, but the Saints responded after the half-time break with a dominant 26-point performance from Leon Henry, shooting at 68 per cent from the field. The 94-82 win earned the Saints their second Championship in three years, and is the second title in a row for Melbourne’s Wesley and New Zealand’s Ili, after winning last season with the Southland Sharks together.
