NBL and SKY sign broadcast deal

The National Basketball League and SKY Television today announced a new partnership for the upcoming 2015/16 NBL season to broadcast every New Zealand Breakers game home or away LIVE on SKY Sport.

SKY will show at least three live games each week (including the Breakers) with all other games throughout the season to be shown on a delayed basis.

Executive Director of the National Basketball League Larry Kestelman said the New Zealand broadcast deal is an indicator of the public’s confidence in the sport and its popularity.

“We are excited to announce the renewal and expansion of our strong partnership with SKY New Zealand. We are dedicated to making the NBL a professional and commercial product that delivers the best entertainment on offer to the public and I’m sure that this deal will go a long way to ensuring that the Breakers continue to attract new fans by being able to watch all of their games, at home and away, live,” he said.

“The NBL is committed to the New Zealand market and supporting the Breakers. A strong New Zealand market is a major part of the NBL’s repositioning as a premier lifestyle and entertainment sport.

“Delivering coverage of all NBL games to New Zealand sports fans is important to us and I’m very pleased that Sky New Zealand will deliver exactly that during the 2015/16 NBL season.

“We will continue to work closely with the Breakers’ management and sponsors to create opportunities for the team both in New Zealand and in Australia.

“The potential for our league to partner with other basketball leagues around the world, particularly in Asia, but also in the United States and across Europe, is of significant importance; it is what differentiates us from so many of the other front line sports. The Breakers will be at the forefront of this international agenda”.

Richard Last Director of Sport at SKY said “We are delighted to have secured exclusive rights for the up and coming NBL season. The Breakers have been the team to watch over recent seasons and it will be fascinating to see what the other teams will need to do to beat them this year”.

The Breakers will play the NBL season opener on Wednesday 7 October when they travel to Adelaide to play the 36ers. The match will air LIVE on SKY Sport at 2130.
