Mitch Norton finds his wings

The Illawarra Hawks have lured NBL All Australian Team representative, and former Townsville captain, Mitch Norton to the club on a two-year contract. Norton recently became a free agent and found the prospect of playing under Head Coach Rob Beveridge an opportunity he couldn't refuse. “I'm excited to be joining the Hawks organisation. After the Crocs closed the doors, the Hawks made contact immediately which was great given the circumstances. "From there it was a no brainer - the chance to work with Bevo was too good to pass up,” said Norton. After joining the Crocodiles in 2012, Norton developed into one of the brightest young prospects in Australian basketball and was named to the extended Australian Boomers squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics. He also represented Australia in both the U17 and U19 World Championships. Playing all 28 games last season, Norton averaged 8.9 points and 2.8 assists. The 23-year old won the the Crocs Players’ Player Award for the second consecutive season, in addition to taking out the Mike Kelly Award for Best Defensive Player of the Year in 2013/14. Head Coach Rob Beveridge said he admires the way Norton goes about his business and is the type of player that will fit perfectly into his system. “I have admired Mitch's toughness and hard-nosed approach for many years now and look forward to having Mitch join us. “He is one of the up and coming stars in the NBL and I look forward to helping him become the best player he can be." The addition of Norton brings the number of players signed by the Illawarra Hawks for the upcoming 2016/17 season to five.
