Mick Downer joins Brisbane Bullets coaching staff

The Brisbane Bullets have secured the services of experienced NBL coach and current Technical Assistant for the Australian Boomers Mick Downer as an Assistant Coach. Downer will join Brisbane Bullets Head Coach Andrej Lemanis and Assistant Coach CJ Bruton to round out an impressive coaching staff for the club’s much anticipated return to NBL in the 2016/17 season. He enjoyed a successful stint at the Cairns from 2009 to 2015, including two Grand Final series, as an Assistant Coach to Aaron Fearne at the Taipans. “It's an honour to be part of the re-birth of the Brisbane Bullets and I'm thankful to Andrej and the guys for the opportunity,” Downer said. “I grew up watching and supporting this team as a kid through the successful 1980’s and early 1990's and I understand how important it is to the basketball community in South-East Queensland to have this iconic brand back. “I'm excited about contributing in whatever way I can to help us being successful on and off the court and I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead." Downer is currently working as the Coach Development Manager for Basketball Queensland and will commence his role with the Bullets on his return from the Rio Olympic Games later this year. Bullets head coach Andrej Lemanis said: "I've known Mick for a long time now and I was first impressed seeing what he was doing in junior basketball while I was coaching as an assistant in Townsville many years ago. “Since then he has obviously been involved not only in the NBL, but with the Emerging Boomers and now on my staff with the Boomers,” Lemanis said. “Mick has a great mind for the game, an unwavering work ethic and is a great team guy. “I'm know he’ll hit the ground running once we return from Rio. I look forward to working with Mick and the rest of our off court team to help build a values based culture within the club." Brisbane Bullets CEO Mitchell Murphy said: "We are excited about Mick's addition to our coaching staff. His quality reputation within the Queensland basketball community, NBL and internationally through the Boomers program further strengthens our high quality coaching structure.” “As a passionate Brisbane born and raised coach and a John Paul College old boy, we know Mick is excited about joining the Bullets family and he’ll undoubtedly make a valued contribution both on and off the court.”
