Melbourne United get their man
Melbourne United has appointed Dean Demopoulos, a man with extensive college and NBA experience, as its head coach. A coach at every level of basketball in the United States, 61-year-old Demopoulos has signed an initial two-year deal to lead Melbourne into the next stage of its NBL history. “We had a lot of people express interest in this job, but Dean was the standout candidate and we are pleased and excited to make this appointment,” Melbourne chief executive Vince Crivelli said. “Dean is an outstanding person and basketball coach with a wealth of experience and knowledge and an outstanding set of values. “He has staunch loyalty to the programs and people he has worked with, he is invigorated by the vision we have for Melbourne United on and off the court and he ticks all the boxes for us.” A career coach, Demopoulos has worked with some of the best minds in the game, including long stints as assistant to John Chaney and Nate McMillan, while shaping the careers of NBA stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and WNBA star Brittney Griner. After his first coaching job at Kennett High School in Pennsylvania, Demopoulos joined John Chaney’s staff at Temple University and stayed for 17 years as the school made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances. One season as head coach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City was the prelude to Demopoulos joining the NBA as lead assistant coach with the Seattle Supersonics and Portland Trail Blazers alongside Nate McMillan. A move to the LA Clippers as Vinny Del Negro’s assistant followed, giving Demopoulos a chance to work with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and provide valuable leadership as the defensive coordinator. A candidate for head coaching jobs with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks, Demopoulos was recently hired by WNBA star Brittney Griner as her personal skills coach, improving her game to MVP levels. “We believe Dean has all the attributes that we need from our coach,” Crivelli said. “He is an excellent skills coach, a great clinician and brilliant with the Xs and Os. “Dean will work well with the players and people around the team, and we all look forward to working with him.” Demopoulos is expected to arrive in Melbourne on April 20.
