Kings sign promising guard Mirko Djeric

The Sydney Kings continue to bolster their ranks for the 2016/17 NBL season with the addition of young guard Mirko Djeric. Sydney-born Djeric began his career in the NBL with the Wollongong Hawks in 2013, playing eight games including the NBL semi-final series against the Perth Wildcats before heading to Townsville, where he played for three seasons. Djeric was regarded as one of Australia’s brightest junior prospects, winning a silver medal with the Australian team at the FIBA Under-17 World Championships in 2012 and was a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport from 2011 to 2013. However, his professional basketball career was threatened after he was shot in the leg at a birthday party in a random act of violence – just days before he was due to fly out to the Czech Republic to play with the Australian team at the 2013 FIBA World Junior Championships. Fortunately – and through his dedication – he recovered and has subsequently played a total of 84 games in the NBL, averaging 3.5 points per game as a dangerous outside shooter who plays with great confidence. Djeric adds depth to an impressive Sydney backcourt that already features the reigning league Most Valuable Player in Kevin Lisch and emerging star Jason Cadee. He is relishing the opportunity to play for his hometown team. “I’m excited to come back home and represent my city," he said. “It will be awesome to play for Andrew Gaze, who is definitely the most successful Australian basketballer we’ve ever had, plus an amazing assistant coach in Dean Vickerman. "The knowledge they have will help me grow as a player and a person.” Djeric’s addition brings the Sydney Kings to six contracted players - Julian Khazzouh, Jeromie Hill, Tom Garlepp and Jason Cadee all return, plus two-time NBL MVP Kevin Lisch.
