Tuesday, May 27, 2025
"He’s got strong instincts, high basketball IQ, great ability to run the floor and be an on-court leader."
The Tasmania JackJumpers have secured American guard David Johnson on a one-year deal.
The 47th overall pick at the 2021 NBA Draft, Johnson most recently played with the Memphis Hustle in the NBA’s G League.
He averaged 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 28 appearances during the 2024/2025 season.
Previous to that, he spent time with Toronto’s G League affiliate, Raptors 905, and lined up in two appearances for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.
“We’re very excited to bring DJ to Tasmania. He’s got strong instincts, high basketball IQ, great ability to run the floor and be an on-court leader,” Tasmania’s Chief Operating Officer Darren Smith said.
“He’s very athletic and dynamic ... a strong shooter. I think the fans will love what he brings and how he goes about it.”
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, the 6’4” shooting guard said he can’t wait to get started at the JackJumpers.
“I’ve heard only great things about the fans and the state, so I’m really excited to play for something bigger than myself and represent Tasmania,” he said.
“(I) really feels like the fans are a huge part of the team. I can’t wait to get down there and defend the island.”
Johnson will arrive in Tasmania in early August, ahead of the JackJumpers’ NBL26 pre-season.
