Goulding returns to Melbourne

One of the league’s most exciting and potent scorers in recent years will return to Melbourne for the 2015-16 season, with Chris Goulding inking a one-year deal. Goulding previously spent two seasons with the Melbourne Tigers, capping that stint with a memorable 50-point performance against the Sydney Kings. Off the back of the 2013/14 NBL season, Goulding earned selection on the Boomers team for the 2014 World Cup and a contract for the just-finished campaign with CAI Zaragoza in Spain. Averaging 8.6 ppg over 33 Liga Endesa games and 11.5 ppg in 16 Eurocup outings, Goulding was an outstanding contributor for Zaragoza, but the pull of home was too great to ignore. “When Chris decided to go to Spain, we always wanted him to come back to Melbourne and we’re thrilled that is happening,” Melbourne United CEO Vince Crivelli said. “In the past few years there have been very few players with the ability to score like Chris – whether it’s from the perimeter or getting to the basket – and we are looking forward to him lighting up the NBL and Melbourne again.” Having played 172 NBL games with Brisbane, Perth, Gold Coast and Melbourne, there is no question Goulding’s breakout season came with the Tigers in the 2013/14 season where he led the league in scoring with 22.8 points per game. His impressive 2014 campaign earned him a spot in the NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks before heading to Spain. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to come back and play for Melbourne again,” Goulding said. “I think there’s a lot to look forward to in the NBL with its new ownership now so I’m very happy to be a part of this league.” The scene is set for some huge games for Melbourne this season with Todd Blanchfield, Nate Tomlinson, David Barlow and Daniel Kickert also confirmed.
