Goulding re-signs with Melbourne United
Melbourne United have announced 2016 NBL MVP runner-up Chris Goulding, has re-signed with the Club for a further two years.
Goulding averaged 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game during the 2015/16 NBL season, leading Melbourne to an 18-10 record, and the NBL’s minor premiership.
To top off a stellar year he has also been announced in the 20-man squad to attend the Boomers pre-Olympic selection camp in July.
Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Demopoulos said retaining Chris as part of the team roster was always a key focus.
“From Ownership to the Coaches and the entire organisation we are beyond happy to know Chris will be here for the next two years. He is the obvious face of the franchise, and he wears it well," said Demopoulos.
Following the 2015-16 season Goulding headed to Europe to play for Auxilium Pallacanestro Torino, in the Lega Basket Seria A, Italy’s first division for the remainder of their season however he never faulted in his NBL team of choice.
“Obviously when you’re a free agent you have to assess all your options but for me Melbourne is my home now. I have a house, and I have some really close friends and family here as well," said Goulding.
"I knew if I was staying in the NBL it would be with Melbourne. I’m pretty happy to be staying here with the Club.”
Goulding said the Melbourne playing group had unfinished business they wanted to address.
“As a whole the club had a really successful year last year so I’m excited to recommit and try and build on it and hopefully have even more success in the near future.
"I definitely want to play better than I did last year. I think it was a solid season by me and the club but obviously we came up short when we needed to. So building on the base that we had last year, we have some key players coming back and new ones coming in, so I think slowly improving throughout the pre-season and really making a push back up to the top is really key for all of us.”
Goulding welcomed the recent announcements of new signings Cedric Jackson and Tai Wesley.
“Ced is a massive signing. His record speaks for itself. He’s an MVP, a multiple championship winner and always been in the finals so anytime we can bring on someone of that calibre it will help our club out on and off the court. His experiences and his skills are top quality. I’m really happy to have him on board.
"Likewise with Tai, his finals experience combined with Ced’s will be a massive boost for us.”
With just over a month to go until the Olympic selection camp Goulding said he was feeling fresh and ready to go.
“The body is feeling pretty good. It’s feeling better than it was at the end of the NBL season.
"My preparation for the Olympic camp will ramp up now after a couple of weeks off. I want to put my best foot forward for the Boomers and get in the best shape that I can. The next few months for me is all about trying to make the Olympics and then helping United to a Championship.”
