Eight teams to compete in 2015/16 season

The National Basketball League will feature all eight teams in the upcoming 2015/16 season, with the Wollongong Hawks confirming their participation behind strong support from the Illawarra community. The Wollongong Hawks will enter the competition with Multi Civil and Rail as their major sponsor, with a number of other businesses already recommitted to the NBL’s oldest club. General Manager Kim Welch said the community backing and vibrant fan interest has given positive indications for the upcoming season. “All the support has been very encouraging and we thank the fans for their patience. It was important we spent time during this off-season working with the relevant parties to set the club up for the future,” said Welch. “This will be the 38th season for the Hawks and I’m ecstatic we will have the opportunity to compete in the NBL and represent this great region on the national sporting stage.” The development comes after the recent Townsville Crocodiles news and both clubs are set to benefit from additional resourcing and support under the new LK Group sponsorship. The Hawks will now focus on securing their on-court talent, and look to keep the same coaching group led by former NBL Coach of the Year Gordie McLeod and up to as many as six players from their 2014/15 roster. “We’ll have to sit down with everyone individually over the next few days but I’m hopeful we’ll be able to retain our coaching staff and a majority of the domestic players,” said Welch. “We will then commence a worldwide search for two exciting new imports and aim to climb back up the NBL ladder.” NBL Chairman Graeme Wade welcomes the announcement about the foundation club. “The Hawks confirming their participation is just another part of the resurgence strategy we’ve been able to implement,” said Wade. “It’s been a fantastic few weeks for the NBL and it augurs well for the upcoming season, which is only four short months away.”
