Best Point Guard Ever: Legends Respond

This week Melbourne United signed Cedric Jackson, stirring the debate whether they had acquired the best point guard in the NBL. All the numbers from his four-year long NBL career suggest he is up there with some of the greats, including Ricky Grace and Darryl McDonald. See what some league legends had to say, then click HERE to vote for yourself! CAL BRUTONL3 “If you sing your own praises you sound out of tune to your listeners, but I would think I was up there. Being a playing coach point guard - you are the focus of every opposition team to cut the head off the snake. “For me to produce the stats that I did I feel like I’m amongst the best - if not the best. “D-Mac [Darryl McDonald] was the changing of the guard. Couldn’t shoot it great from outside, but what he lacked on the offensive punch he made up on defence. “Cedric Jackson is the same, but he has not built anything from scratch. He already came to the Breakers after they had won their first Championship. “If I had to vote I would vote for the Amazing one. He set up the stage for all the Wildcats' success - they hadn't won anything before Ricky Grace came along. “I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my son CJ who has six Championships so I can’t leave him out! “I would have to put myself, my son, and then if I had to pick another I would pick Ricky for the fact that he took my team the Wildcats to their first Championship so I am partial to that. That’s why he draws the edge.” DEREK RUCKERL5 “I believe that Ricky was the best when you factor in the Championships. “His game was more complete than Cedric’s or Darryl’s. “He had a serious feel for the moment and always shined. “However, I do not feel that Rick was as talented as D-Mac, Heal, CJ Bruton or Doug Overton - but he was smart and played with a champion’s mentality. “Cedric would not rate in my all-time top five, but I do admire him as a player in this era.” SHANE HEALL4 “When trying to judge an impossible task like this you look at longevity, you look at Championships - you have to bring all those things into play. “I would probably have to go for Ricky Grace for longevity, but there have probably been better individual performances in shorter time frame. "I’ve definitely played against more dynamic point guards on a season-by-season basis. “The best players in just one season are not the same as someone like Ricky doing it over a long period of time, in a very good team.” ERIC COOKSL2 “Darnell Mee is one of my favourite point guards. I definitely thought he was the best - he was a master in his ability to control the game. “He read the game so well and was an excellent passer. His athleticism was amazing and he would regularly dunk on centres! “My top three would have to have to be Darnell, Ricky and D-Mac for sure. It’s hard to say just one. “I like some of the guys that were more scorers back in the early days too, like Bobby Locke from Geelong. "Cal Bruton definitely deserves a mention, and Cedric is outstanding in the modern era.” ANDREW GAZEL1 “I think it’s very hard to separate guys like Phil Smyth, D-Mac, Ricky Grace, Cal Bruton, Cedric Jackson and Shane Heal. Those guys are just a level above the others. “They all have different points of emphasis in their game and I’ve enjoyed watching them all. “On a personal standpoint, the toughest and most intimidating to go up against was probably D-Mac. “I find it very hard to separate them though because they all have different attributes, and all impacted their teams in different ways."
