Off-Season Update: Childress makes NBDL debut

Josh Childress played his first NBA D-League game on the weekend, dropping 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in a strong debut for the Texas Legends. The Legends went down 113-115 to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, but redeemed themselves the following day with a 17-point victory in their back-to-back matches. Childress contributed nine points and eight boards, as he looks to make a late-career return to the NBA. Various teams have reportedly shown interest in the 32-year old, while his Kings’ counterpart Marcus Thornton is also consolidating the NBL’s passage to the NBA. Thornton contributed 20 points in a win during the Maine Red Claws' recent clash with the Grand Rapids Drive, which also saw the Red Claws breaking a franchise record with 24 made three-pointers. After five seasons with the Sydney Kings, former captain Ben Madgen exercised his option to pursue his dream of playing in Europe ahead of the 2015/16 NBL season. Madgen signed with the Verviers-Pepinster Wolves in Belgium and is showing huge strides of success as their starting small forward; leading the Belgium-Scooore League in points with an average of 18.7 per game. Cairns Taipans captain Cam Gliddon signed a 10-week contract with Polish side AZS Koszalin in a bid to chase Olympic selection, after a career NBL season. In his first game in an AZS Koszalin uniform, Gliddon logged seven points and a team-high 34 minutes of court time in their 72-52 loss against Anwil Wloclawek. Last week Basketball Australia named Gliddon to the Australian Boomers initial 26-man squad. Team mate Markel Starks also made the move to Europe, signing with Vanoli Cremona for the remainder of the 2015-16 Lega Basket Serie A season. In his first game, Starks scored eight points that featured the game-winning bucket (watch below) as he clinched a 74-73 victory against Betaland CdO.

This move is the second time Starks has played professionally in Italy, previously playing for the FMC Ferentino before making his NBL debut. Import Omar Samhan also began his NBL career this season, joining the Townsville Crocodiles and has since reportedly turned down offers from SEABL’s North-West Tasmania Thunder and Taranaki Mountainairs, and taken up an offer in Puerto Rico. Samhan signed with Atléticos de San Germán as he scored a game-high 21 points coupled with nine rebounds in their recent win over Leones De Ponce, while Corey Maynard has taken up his first overseas offer in Finland. Maynard has played two games with the Bisons Loimaa, chipping in seven and six points respectively.
